Cardo excavations - it was an ancient Roman-built covered mall and boulevard

The Hurva Synagogue being rebuilt. It was destroyed in 1948
and below it are 2 pictures showing how it looked when the area became part of Israel in 1967.

This is a detail from the above picture showing how you can walk on the walls (and we did!).
At left is an opening narrowing to a slit for firing arrows. At right is a larger opening for throwing boiling oil on your enemies.
